Certification in Thanatology (CT)

Certification in Thanatology (CT) is a foundation certification that enhances the professional designation established by the academic discipline of each certificate holder. It recognizes the specific educational background in dying, death and bereavement. Thus, a counselor/therapist or educator is defined by his/her education and work experience. The certification will note the special educational training in the field.

Requirements for Certification in Thanatology (CT)
To apply to take the certification exam, applicants must have:

• A bachelor’s degree (include transcript) and two years of verified related experience
• Or a master’s or doctorate (include transcript) and one year of verified related experience
• 60 documented contact hours in thanatology and related topics
• 2 letters of support from supervisors or colleagues.

Fellow in Thanatology (FT)

Fellow in Thanatology (FT) is an advanced professional certification for thanatology professionals. It recognizes practitioners and educators in the discipline of death, dying, and bereavement who have met specified knowledge requirements measured through a standardized testing process and who demonstrate advanced levels of competency in teaching, research and/or clinical practice through a professional portfolio.

An Advanced Certification Task Force of experts from the ADEC membership with advice from members of associated organizations developed the FT credential and the criteria for the professional portfolio.

Requirements for the Fellow in Thanatology (FT)

  • Master's/doctorate degree
  • Five years of experience in the field of thanatology
  • Two letters from a supervisor or colleague familiar with the candidate’s work
  • Verification of education and experience
  • The foundation level Certification (CT) in ADEC*
  • A minimum of 12 units on the professional portfolio with complete documentation

* Individuals who have not earned the CT certification may apply for Fellow in Thanatolgy but are required to successfully pass the CT exam before they will be awarded the FT certification.

ADEC- So Cal conducted a half day workshop on June 28th, 2008 designed to help attendees prepare for the examination that is required to earn the Certification in Thanatology (CT).

We had a great response to this workshop and it's definitely something that we'll do again in the future!
